Home -- Speeches -- small business owner.

I am a small business owner.

I’m Mark Treaster the Democratic candidate for State Representative from the 101st District. I wish to thank the NAACP and the Prairie Independent Living Resource Center for sponsoring this forum. These are two groups that should be commended for their work to make Hutchinson, and Reno County, a better place to live.

I chose to be a candidate for State Representative because I care about people and I desire to serve the people of my district in Topeka. As a former educator and as a businessman in the service industry, I have taken great personal satisfaction in meeting the needs of people. Within our 101st district the past several years I have repeatedly heard about growing the economy and the support of public education, but I have seen few results. We need leadership and effective representation.

My vision is to provide an atmosphere conducive to an entrepreneurial spirit, which will result in the creation of new businesses and new jobs. I have been, and will continue to be as a state legislator, proactive with 20/20 Vision, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, the Quest Center, and the new HCC entrepreneurial program. These organizations have goals to help Reno County develop a stronger economy.

As a landowner, I understand the difficulties the farming community is suffering and will work to make the agricultural economy healthier.

There is nothing more important in my vision of Reno County in 10 to 20 years then the quality of education available to our children. Our schools currently do a great job but are being required by the federal government and state governments to do more. I support improving our educational system, and as a former teacher of students with disabilities, I understand education and the needs of our schools as they work to meet these new requirements.

As a businessman, I fully understand the tax burden placed on individuals and businesses. Government spending must be responsible and accountable as it provides the services needed by our society.

Lastly, my campaign is a bipartisan effort and I pledge thoughtful consideration to my constituents because I know all people have valid beliefs from their personal perspectives.

It will be a privilege and honor to serve the people of the 101st District in Topeka the next two years.
